In 2013 I wrote my undergraduate dissertation on conducting. During my final year I directed the University’s Chamber Orchestra, a great honour and learning curve. I immersed myself in the craft of conducting and surprisingly found great dissatisfaction with much of the literature on it.

There seemed to me to be a great big gaping hole in the study of conducting, because all conducting ‘manuals’ or textbooks talked about the physicality of the conductor, without mentioning the other huge element of their communication in rehearsal – language.

I hope you enjoy it.
